Description
It's small and lightweight, yet it still packs 15 functions between its scales. With the Compact in your pocket you're ready for anything in your everyday adventures. The unique combination tool, which acts as a bottle opener, can opener, screwdriver, and wire stripper, is smaller in size compared to other 91mm knives and allows this knife to have a very slim profile. Tools like the mini-screwdriver, which attaches to the corkscrew, and the ballpoint pen, offer additional functionality to the knife without adding an bulk. You'd be hard-pressed to find another tool this size that houses this much functionality. Like all Swiss Army Knives, the Compact has a lifetime warranty, stainless steel implements and Swiss-made quality and durability. There, he and the cutlers’ union he formed produced the finest steel cutlery, finished with the now-famous proprietary edge preferred globally by professional and home cooks. In 1891, Karl supplied the Swiss Army with its standard issue Soldier’s Knife and in 1897 with the Officer’s Knife. In 1921, after the death of his mother, Victoria, and with the advent of stainless steel, then known as “inoxydable” and used in the production of his cutlery, Karl changed the name of the company to Victorinox. It is from those humble beginnings that a worldwide icon was born. Today, Victorinox is still owned and operated by the Elsener family, and both the company and family still resides in the small village of Ibach, Switzerland. Care Tips for Swiss Army Knives The various tools are manufactured from high-quality steel with precisely tuned features that are essential for the particular application. The steel is tempered, annealed and polished to achieve the necessary hardness and provide optimum resistance to corrosion. Sharpening To re-sharpen your knife, use a whetstone at an angle of 15°– 20°. This will result in a cutting angle of 30°– 40°. If sharpening on a grinding wheel, always cool with plenty of water to avoid excessive temperatures and the resulting damages that may occur. Cleaning After you’ve used your Swiss Army Knife for all of its various applications, such as cutting open numerous boxes, you may notice that the blades begin to stick together. Opening and closing the blades in warm water several times will allow the tools to easily move again. Once they have dried, it is recommended, to apply a small drop of oil between the blade or tool shank and the spring. To optimally maintain the locking mechanism, periodically apply a drop of our recommended Swiss Army Knife Oil. Never put Swiss Army Knives in the dishwasher.

This review is dedicated to recommending the best all around SAK's based upon my opinion. I know I spent forever trying to make that decision, so I'll put the info down here in case it helps speed up the process for someone else. Spoiler: It's either the Compact or the Rambler.I have tried 3 different types of Swiss Army Knives. The Rambler, Spartan (basic model) and Compact. Of these, I find the Compact to be the best general purpose EDC knife, although I do feel like I am missing out on the Rambler's Philips head and larger nail file. I would not recommend the Spartan - not that you can really go wrong with one, just that both the Rambler and Compact are probably better options. The Tools:Knife (Very Good) - It's your basic Swiss Army Knife blade. Works well enough. The stainless steel will not hold an edge for very long compared with many higher carbon steels, but will have excellent rust resistance. It has so far been fine for everyday use.Can/Bottle opener (Excellent) - I've had good experiences with both functions. As a bottle opener, it is actually easier to use than the default SAK version. As an aside, it will bend the removed bottlecap quite a bit, so if you intend on collecting them I don't recommend it. Great otherwise. As a can opener, it isn't very quick, but is relatively easy to use, and gets the job done. I've notably had (somewhat labor intensive) success using it on a can which was thrown into a camp fire and expanded. A normal can-opener proved useless in that situation. This tool also can be used to double as a flathead screwdriver, which it does quite well. I've tried it on Philips head screws, and it generally works, but it's not as nice as an actual Philips head screwdriver. If a Phillips head screw is in somewhat tight, you may also have to worry about stripping the screw. Finally, it has a wire stripper, which I have never used and therefore cannot comment on.Scissors (Very Good) - The scissors work well, and without much difficulty. If you want to cut small things, or use them for personal grooming, however, I recommend a smaller set of scissors, such as the ones on the Classic or the Rambler. For cutting larger things, these are of course better than the smaller version of the scissors.Corkscrew (???) - I have yet to use it. I'm hoping that it may eventually be there to save the day though.Hook (OK) - The actual hook function is pretty much useless. When I tried using it to carry a shopping bag, part of the hook was pressed into my hand by the bags weight. It ended up being more uncomfortable than just carrying the bag. That said, the hook has a nail file on it, which is in fact useful. The nail file is not very wide, which makes it much less pleasant to use than the default SAK nail file present on the Rambler and many other SAK's. Still, it does work acceptably well.Tweezers (Good - presumably) - I haven't used them, but just by playing around with them I can tell that they won't be as nice as a dedicated set. Still, they should usually get the job done. If you sterilize the included straight pin and use it as well, you'll have a decent anti-splinter kit.Toothpick (Good) - It's a plastic toothpick. Good for the intended function. Works well enough.Pen (Poor, but wonderful to have) - Actually using this tiny pen is a pain. It's hard to write as clearly, and you're hand will probably cramp up if you use it for any significant amount of writing. That said, it's adequate for a quick note or sloppy signature. Occasionally, I've found it very convenient to just have a pen present when I wouldn't have otherwise.Straight Pin (Very Good - surprisingly useful) - This straight pin isn't anything special, but I find that myself using it again and again. It's potential functions include help with splinter removal (if you have something to sterilize it with), digging stuff out of small spaces, making small holes in things, and many other quirky functions. I find myself using this pin around once a week.Mini-Screwdriver (???) - I don't have glasses, or work with any screws small enough to warrant using this tool, so it is useless to me. Many other reviewers are quite fond of it though. The Main Alternative:The Rambler: This knife is, in my opinion, the second best all around Swiss Army Knife. You'll lose out on the pen, pin, can opener, corkscrew, and mini screw driver. Also the hook, which is no loss at all. You'll gain a better nail file and one of the best SAK Phillips head screw drivers. The Rambler is also much smaller, so it will be easy to carry, but harder to get it out to use. This also means the Rambler has a smaller set of scissors and a smaller knife. Both tools are better for delicate work than the ones the Compact has, but of course, worse for cutting larger things. Other versions similar to the Rambler exist where you can trade the the toothpick for a pen, and optionally, also the trade the tweezers for a small, not super bright, pen-light.I would get this knife if you want: Best all around functionality in a SAK.I would instead get the Rambler if you: Want both a Phillips and Flathead screwdriver, and/or something smaller.I would get a different SAK if there's a tool you just have to have, and neither the Compact nor Rambler has it.
